2024 Holiday Gift List for the German Shorthaired Pointer in your Life

Who else feels as though pretty soon Christmas in July deals will be inching further back to “March into Christmas Madness” and eventually just be a year-round gifting extravaganza where the holidays never end? I feel like I’m dating myself by saying I remember shopping seasons that were not named. You simply went shopping some time in December and knew well enough to try to avoid the lines around Christmas Eve. Nowadays the holiday season has crept into our lives earlier and earlier each year and while it makes planning and organizing our gift giving a little bit easier, thanks in part to Black Friday and now pre-Black Friday sales, as well as leaked planned sales and “dropped” deals, many pet owners overlook their fur babies’ wish list until it’s almost too late.

Many a stocking with Fido or Gingersnap’s name hangs alongside the kids’ on the mantle (and if you’ve forgotten that too, we’ve got you covered - check out these stockings), so let’s make 2024 a holiday our pupper can enjoy too. Many of the items on this list are specific to the highly energetic and athletic German Shorthaired Pointer (GSP), most are interchangeable with whatever breed your other child may be.

Whether your GSP enjoys exploring the outdoors, retrieving, or simply being part of family activities, thoughtful gifts can help enhance the bond between you and your dog, while ensuring your companion stays healthy, entertained, and happy. And who doesn’t love seeing them rip through mountains of wrapping paper?

Here are some items that cater to the GSP’s specific needs, from exercise and mental stimulation to grooming and comfort so you can check a few more items off your 2024 holiday checklist.

4. PetSafe Automatic Ball Launcher

For GSPs who have boundless energy (what GSP doesn’t?!) and love fetching, the PetSafe Automatic Ball Launcher allows you to throw balls without having to move. Simply load the launcher, set it for a distance, and watch your dog run. It’s perfect for rainy days or when you need to give your arm a rest while your dog stays active.

Pros:

  • Multiple distance and angle settings.

  • Great for tireless fetch-loving dogs.

  • Hands-free ball launching means less slobbery tosses for you!

Cons:

  • Needs space for operation (outdoor use).

  • Requires a compatible ball size (often sold separately).

Approximate Price: $100 - $150

5. Furminator Undercoat Deshedding Tool

I don’t know about yours, but Jasper sheds ALOT. This is mostly due to the fact that GSPs have two coats of fur. Most GSPs are liver and white or black and white, which means us lucky owners have visible dog hair on just about any color clothing or furniture. This deshedding tool helps keep their coat healthy and reduces the amount of loose fur. The Furminator is specifically designed to reach through the topcoat and remove loose undercoat without damaging the skin. This one might be more of a present for you than your dog, but I also don’t know a GSP that doesn’t back in the little extra attention a few minutes of groom time brings. Attention seeker much?

Pros:

  • Reduces shedding by up to 90%.

  • Easy to use with a non-slip handle.

  • Helps prevent mats and tangles.

Cons:

  • Can be too harsh on some dogs with sensitive skin.

Approximate Price: $30 - $50

6. KONG Classic Dog Toy

The KONG Classic is a favorite among dog owners for a reason. Made from durable rubber, this chew toy can be filled with treats or peanut butter to keep your GSP entertained for hours. It’s a great tool for satisfying your dog’s chewing instincts and can also be used for crate training. I use two, leaving one to freeze while Jasper actively works on one. The frozen treat helped soothe him while teething and added a little extra time to work through before depleting all the peanut butter in a couple gulps.

Pros:

  • Durable and versatile.

  • Can be filled with treats or food for added enrichment.

  • Helps alleviate anxiety and boredom.

Cons:

  • Not ideal for aggressive chewers (though there are stronger options available).

  • Some dogs might lose interest in it if not filled with food.
    Approximate Price: $10 - $15

7. PetSafe Wireless Dog Fence System

For GSPs who need a safe, secure outdoor space to play, the PetSafe Wireless Dog Fence System provides an easy-to-install, wireless boundary for your dog. It’s ideal for those who don’t have a physical fence but want to ensure their German Shorthaired Pointer stays within safe limits.

Pros:

  • Simple to set up and adjust.

  • Customizable boundary range.

  • Includes a waterproof collar.

Cons:

  • May require time to train your dog to recognize the boundaries.

  • Can be inconsistent in areas with thick walls or interference.

Approximate Price: $250 - $350

These carefully selected gifts offer a variety of ways to enhance the life of both the German Shorthaired Pointer and their owner. From playtime to training and grooming, each product has been chosen to support the unique needs and lifestyle of this amazing breed. Whether you’re looking to keep your GSP entertained, healthy, or comfortable, these gifts will surely make their holidays extra special! Let me know what I missed. I’d love to hear what you’re getting your GSP this year!

Happy Howl-a-days from A Jasper Life!!

1. Chuckit! Ultra Ball Dog Toy

A must-have for any active GSP, the Chuckit! Ultra Ball is designed for high-energy dogs who love to play fetch. It’s made from durable rubber, making it tough enough for long-lasting play sessions, even in the toughest environments. This is one of the only balls that Jasper does not completely destroy within seconds of catching, so a few of them will be under our tree this year.

Pros:

  • Durable and tough.

  • Bounce and float for interactive play.

  • Comes in a variety of sizes to suit different dog breeds.

Cons:

  • Some dogs may chew it apart over time. (But I have not found this to be the case)

Approximate Price: $8 - $12

2. Outward Hound Hide-A-Squirrel Puzzle Toy

GSPs are highly intelligent and benefit from mentally stimulating toys. This puzzle toy challenges them to use their problem-solving skills to “hunt” and retrieve squeaky squirrels from the log. It mimics the natural hunting behavior of a German Shorthaired Pointer and provides hours of entertainment. I recommend this for younger puppies who are not yet heavy chewers.

Pros:

  • Mentally stimulating and fun.

  • Helps reduce anxiety and boredom.

  • Washable fabric and durable construction.

Cons:

  • The squirrels may be chewed up quickly by aggressive chewers.

Approximate Price: $15 - $20

3. Ruffwear Front Range Dog Harness

The Ruffwear Front Range Harness is designed for active dogs like German Shorthaired Pointers who enjoy daily walks, hikes, or outdoor adventures. It features padded chest and belly panels for comfort and is easy to put on and take off. The harness is ideal for reducing pulling while keeping your dog safe and secure. Jasper is a heavy puller, especially when that prey drive kicks in for that poor unsuspecting squirrel that may cross his path so this helps keep him, myself, and Mr. Squirrel safer on our walks.

Pros:

  • Comfortable, adjustable fit.

  • Ideal for leash training and walking.

  • Reflective trim for visibility in low-light conditions.

Cons:

  • Some users report wear over time with extended use.

Approximate Price: $30 - $40
